That’s right. If stupid questions did exist they would only be the ones that people have, but don’t ask. If a tree falls in the wood, does it make a sound? Does a question exist if it hasn’t been asked? We don’t know – but here’s what we do:

GENERAL

What Is Your Turnaround Time?

Our standard turn around time for print production is 15-20 business days. Turn time begins when you sign off on our digitally supplied PDF proof AND Pay a 50% deposit on your project. TURN TIME DOES NOT BEGIN when you send us files. We do turn around PDF proofs quickly, generally one to two business days. Please note that as quantities increase and processes are added it may not be possible to complete your project in the standard turn time.

**It is not always possible to rush projects. Our production schedule and ability to rush order materials may make a quick-turn impossible. Talk to us before counting on being able to plan for a rushed timeline.**

WHAT ARE YOUR RUSH FEES?

This is a percentage added to your estimate. If you need things faster our Rush Fees are applied as follows based on client sign off by noon CST with delivery by 6pm on required day.

  • next day turn = 100% additional
  • 2 day turn = 50% additional
  • 3 day turn = 25% additional
  • 5 day turn = 10% additional

This is NOT inclusive of shipping time or costs.
Example: If client signs off by Monday noon, 2 day turn would arrive on Thursday (we ship on Wednesday). Turn times figured on regular business days (Monday through Friday).

PAYMENT TERMS

A 50% deposit is due to begin a project. Payment is due upon completion of the work in our studio, before time of shipment. Shipping and taxes are not included in estimates. Payment via check is preferred. Payment may be made with check, credit card or through Paypal. Estimates are good for 30 days.
As a general rule we do not issue NET 30 payment terms. If you complete a couple projects with us and would like terms, please ask for a credit application. Finance charges (18% APR) will be assessed on all invoices 30 days past due. A $30 fee will be added to any bank returned checks.

Sustainability

Is letterpress sustainable?

Yes! Letterpress printing has been around since before electricity was invented and will be around long after the energy apocalypse. Some of our presses are entirely powered by green energy and by that we mean our own hands and feet.

Are your stocks recycled?

We use stocks from a range of suppliers. Some of them are recycled, but sadly not enough. The recycled stock options in Australia are fairly low – help us put pressure on our suppliers but requesting recycled whenever you can!

However, we print on uncoated stocks which means that once we’ve printed on them they are 100% recyclable.

What kind of Ink do you use?

We primarily use rubber based ink (except for the metallics which only come in oil based ink).

Depending on the colour our rubber-based ink is made up of:
20-30% vegetable oil (including soy and linseed)
12-35% petroleum
15-25% pigment
20-40% synthetic resins

If you’d like to avoid ink, we could letterpress print bline or emboss without any ink. There are limitations with the line weight for embossing, and legibility on contact details can be tricky with both options, but it can be worth exploring if the project calls for it.

What do you do with your paper offcuts?

We try to minimise wastage where possible so will always try to cut large sheets as efficiently as possible. We recycle all our offcuts. Sometimes we work with Dodgy Paper to create limited edition handmade stock made from our own offcuts. 

Why aren’t all stocks made from 100% recycled materials?

We agree that they should be! However, the technology isn’t there yet. Depending on the components of various stocks, they need some synthetic material like ____ to bind the fibres together. Cotton or wood pulp fibres that have been recycled multiple times tend to lose elasticity.

What is the difference between pre-consumer and post-consumer waste?

Pre-consumer waste is generated during a manufacturing process. For example, cotton stocks with pre-consumer waste are made with cotton fibres from offcuts in textile manufacturing. Post-consumer waste is created after a product has been consumed. Packaging from your online orders might go into some of the stocks that we use to print your business cards.

What is FSC certification?

FSC stands for the Forest Stewardship Council, a non-profit organisation that promotes responsible forestry practices. You’ll see their logo on many of the papers that we use. It means the materials for the paper came from a forest where harvested trees are replanted and standards are set for responsible practices in regards to the environment, wildlife and indigienous people. It’s the only scheme recognised by the WWF, Greenpeace and Planet Ark.

DESIGN

Can you design something for me?

Yes, we offer design services for all sorts of businesses and brands big and small. We also design for individuals celebrating a personal milestone or event. We love designing intimate physical moments, applying stories, branding and logo designs to packaging, direct mail, stationery, business cards and invitations.

How does the design process work?

We treat all our  design projects the same. We start with a brief and we work together with our clients  to create a completely custom design solution in response.

It always begins with a good conversation – preferably face to face either in our studio, or through a video call. From there we work together to ascertain your requirements and build the brief. We’ll put together an estimate and an itemised scope of works. 

Once that is estimate and scope of works is approved and a deposit is paid, we begin the design process.

I already have a clear idea of what I want, can you help me put it together?

Yes! Send through your files and ideas and we can work together from there. If you can come to us with a robust and clear brief it really simplifies the design process for us. 

I have spotted something on your website/instagram that I love can you make the same for me?

The aim of our portfolio is to showcase different methods of production and how those methods enhance design ideas. If you’re feeling inspired by something on our site, that’s great! We can work with you to produce something completely unique to you and your brief. 

However, we do not offer a templates to pick from that can be customised. The work that we feature on our website and instagram is credited to the designers that created it. Some of the work is designed by us, some of the work is sent to us for production only.

We will not print or design reproductions or copies of anyone else’s design work for you.

Workshops

Do I need any printing experience?

No, Our workshops are for beginners so no previous printing experience is necessary. 

Can I print my own artwork?

Not at this stage, but keep an eye out for our advanced workshops which we are looking into now 😉  

What should I wear?

Please wear something you don’t mind getting dirty – the presses are oily and inky, neither of which are easy to get out of clothes. Closed toe shoes are also required.

What presses do you use for your workshops?

You will have the opportunity to print on our Chandler and Price platen presses which are over 100 years old! You will also have the option to print on our Asbern proofing press.
